LUMC Devotion Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 When we see what is going on around the third world countries, we surely acknowledge that many of our “First-World” problems are not problems at all. Perhaps challenges and inconveniences that we encounter in this country are inconveniences because the appliances, technology, and comfort to which we are used to fail to function as they should. But those failures help us to remember that we should give thanks for them. And that is what I am doing today. Our refrigerator quit working and I felt frustrated but then I remember that I should be grateful for the years it has served my family. We love and should be thankful for technology, from the electronics that power our phones, tablets, computers to refrigerators, washers and dryers that allow us to clean our clothes to automobiles to indoor plumbing. I am grateful for televisions that help keep us informed and entertained, and I am also grateful for the many choices we have: cable, satellite, Hulu, Firestick, Amazon, Roku and Apple TV, to name just a few. And I am grateful for gaming systems that occupy kids while teaching them unique hand-eye coordination. I am thankful for book clubs, e-books and audio books for the way they capture our imaginations and help us to dream bigger and bolder. I am also grateful for great music and the way the music captures our attention and amazing lyrics cause us to think. Let’s not forget electricity, zoom/video conferencing, and the fun that comes with taking in a musical, play or other cultural events. Finally I am happy to be running the race like the Apostle Paul noted in I Corinthians 9:24-27. What are you grateful for today? Loving and merciful God, we greatly appreciate the things you’ve allowed us to develop to make our lives easier. Thank you for advancements in this great country.
