Lenexa UMC Devotion

LUMC Devotion Hallelujah, Thine the glory, Hallelujah, amen, Hallelujah, Thine the glory, Revive us again!! Will You revive us again, that your people may rejoice in You? Psalm 85:6 Yesterday Nan chose this old revival hymn to end our worship service. This hymn flooded back memories of my childhood. My Grandmother lived across the street from a nondenominational church and each spring and fall they would hold a an old fashion tent revival. My sisters and I would be entertained as we watched the evangelist whip the people into a frenzy as they jumped around and danced in the aisles. At the end of the service they would sing this hymn, Revive Us Again, as the people answered the altar call. As we approach Fresh Start Sunday, I am reflecting on where we have been and where we might be going as a church. It’s been a rough 18 months for our congregation. We have gone from regular worship to the church being closed and worship only online. Then we rejoiced as the church reopened, only to see worship move back to online. Reopened with no masks, to now open, but masks recommended. Upon reflection, I feel that worship services have changed perhaps forever. Our online service has reached out to new folks as well as members alike. Our Worship in the Park has bought in new folks and members who haven’t felt comfortable worshiping indoors. Regardless of what has happened, we are still God’s children and we have found ways to worship and stay connected with one another. With Fresh Start Sunday the last Sunday this month, it will be a chance for us to sing “Hallelujah, Thine the glory, Revive us again.” It will be a chance to renew our energy, to invite friends to worship with us, to let the community know that while worship may have changed, we are still strong followers of Jesus. All Sunday School classes are back to meeting and experiencing the in person fellowship we have missed. I encourage everyone not involved in a Sunday School class to explore each of the classes and join one of those fellowships. Heavenly Half Hour will be returning allowing us to reconnect and be revived. Nothing better than a cup of coffee, a cookie and laughing and talking with fellow church members and friends! The last verse of this old revival hymn says; Revive us again, fill each heart with Thy love; May each soul be rekindled with love from above. Hallelujah, Thine the glory! Hallelujah, amen! Hallelujah Thine the glory! Revive us again! Yesterday as we sang this hymn, I did not see people jumping around or dancing in the aisle as happened at the tent revival across the street from my Grandmother’s house (although, that would have been entertaining), but hopefully each of us felt God’s spirit moving in our hearts and each of us will feel a revival in our spirits as out church continues to move forward to “a new normal”! One of my favorite songs says, “And God will raise you up on eagle’s wing, Bear you on the breath of dawn, Make you to shine like the sun, and hold you in the palm of his hand.” My prayer for each of us is to remember that regardless of what comes our way, we are still God’s children and He will be with us always. Dear God, revive us again, raise us up on eagle’s wings. Make us to shine like the sun so that we may reflect your love to everyone we come in contact with. Amen.
