Lenexa UMC Devotion
LUMC Devotion “Waiting Upon God” This is based on Jesus’ command to His disciples not to leave Jerusalem but wait for the gift His Father had promised (Acts 1:4). What does waiting upon God mean? What did it mean to the disciples and what lesson can we learn in our spiritual journey as Christ’s disciples of today? While waiting upon God to answer our prayers, sometimes things turn out to be different from what we are expecting. When going through rough or trying times in our lives, it is easy to be tempted to start questioning God. But the best thing to do during testing time, is to hang in there with God until you know what He wants you to do. That is why it is very important for us to walk in obedience to God’s word, or His schedule, and not depend on our own strength only. Waiting upon God requires faith, patience, courage, determination and staying connected to God. We need to be continually connected to God, because He is our source of strength, knowledge, and wisdom. He gives us courage and the desire to follow God. During in-between time of waiting, we can learn from the disciples. The Bible says: “With one accord they all continued in prayer… (Acts 1:14). This means, waiting on God is not passive. You have to take action. You cannot just say I am waiting upon the Lord as an excuse to escape reality. For example, how can someone say we are waiting upon God to provide for us, when they have horrible financial habits that have put them in a financial crisis? The prophet Isaiah says this to encourage us; … those who wait for the Lord will renew their strength, they will mount up on wings like eagles, they will run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint (Isaiah 40:31). As prophet Isaiah tells us, let us wait upon God, for in Him we will get new strength and vitality for our journey. Let us fix our eyes upon Jesus, who is the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). As today’s Disciples of Christ, may God help us to live in obedience to the word of God. Prayer: Most loving God, help me to trust You even when it does not seem to make sense, because Your promises are true. Help me through the power of the Holy Spirit to be devoted in prayer and to Your word to prepare my heart for the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in my life. In Jesus name. Amen. Rev.
