Weekly Newsletter–September 8

new & upcoming at LUMC!
A forklift was delivered to the north side of the church yesterday afternoon. The forklift will be used to unload and move equipment needed for the installation of the range hood exhaust system. In addition, a crane will be on site today to lift the HVAC equipment onto the flat roof area. This is also part of the range hood exhaust system installation. The crane will be set up on the north side of the building but may impact a small portion of the west parking lot. The contractors will set up orange cones to block off areas as necessary. They only expect the crane and forklift to be on site for the day.
All of the floor tile has been installed in the kitchen and hallway. About half of the tile has been grouted. Grouting should be completed this week. After the tilework is finished, installation of the FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Panels) will begin. The panels come in large sheets (similar to sheets of drywall), and will be used as the backsplash on the kitchen walls. The FRP is high gloss white, easily washable (by code), durable, and scuff resistant. It will give our kitchen a very clean high-tech look.
Workmen continue to remove the stubborn mastic (glue) from the hardwood floors so they can be sanded, stained, sealed, and restored to their original beauty.
That’s it for the week.

Putting God First In Living and Giving
Do we worship idols? The answer may surprise you.
Beginning September 19, we will hear about God’s generosity and our response as we experience our stewardship program, first: putting GOD first in living and giving, developed by author and pastor Mike Slaughter. There will be opportunities in worship, in Sunday school, and through devotions that can be used at church or at home.
The devotion books may be picked up outside the sanctuary, or we are happy to mail you one—just contact the church office at (913) 888-5600 or office@lenexaumc.org. The daily readings are designed to be read September 13–October 10. This is also a great time to connect with a Sunday school class if you are not currently in one. The church office can help you find the best class for you.
We are made in God’s image and are meant to be creators of life and hope, not the consumers of our culture’s shiny gods. We have the ability to change the world and create a legacy that will live forever in the lives of generations to follow. That legacy starts when each of us takes the hard steps of financial discipline and fulfilling the call to generosity that God has placed in all of us.
The goal of this stewardship program is not to make you feel guilty, nor is it to say that you have to be exactly like this or that person. The goal is for all of us to ask questions of ourselves and be open to the possibility that God will lead us in new directions in our lives.
During the four-week program, we’ll be challenged in a number of different ways. We’ll be asked to look for the idols in our own lives (Hint: Most of them aren’t animals made of gold) and name the ways these idols enslave us, holding us back from living in the true freedom that God desires for us.
We’ll be challenged to consider the place that money, work, and debt have in our own lives. What are our common understandings of these, and might the witness of Scripture lead us to some different understandings?
We’ll be challenged to ask ourselves what it means for us to be faithful, to save, and to give. How do we balance all the competing interests in our lives? What priorities does God want us to have?
Finally, we’ll be challenged to give with our hearts, not out of obligation or a sense of duty and not just when we think the recipient deserves our gift. Instead, we’ll be challenged to give the way God gives—freely, fully, with no favorites or expectations of repayment.
It is our prayer that, at the end of these four weeks, we will have begun to grow into the individuals and the church that God knows we can be. Please join us in first: putting GOD first in living and giving.
Saturday, September 11
Lenexa UMC Men’s Group will have a meeting featuring a special guest presentation on September 11 at 8:00 am in the Wesley Room.
Title: Reflections on Faith and Its Relevance in the UK in 2021
Presenter:  Laurie Richardson
Laurie grew up in Shawnee and Lenexa and has been a lifelong member of LUMC (returning when she visits her family here).  She spent five years working in Paris before moving to London in 1999.  She moved there to work for a strategy consulting firm and has continued working in business strategy roles both internally as well as a consultant to global organizations.
Wednesday, September 22 | 5–7 p.m.
We invite you, your friends, and neighbors to a Block Party in the south parking lot on Wednesday, September 22! There will be food, music, and activities for the kids.
Friday, October 1
Our next time to serve at St. Mary’s Food Kitchen is Friday, October 1. Since they are not allowing people to take lunches for their families, the number of lunches they would like us to provide is down to 200–250 instead of the 700–750 we have provided since the start of COVID. We already have enough commitments to prepare the lunches we need! They would also like us to provide up to 7 people to help serve the lunches, water, juice, and milk and to help with the maintenance of the lunch room. If you could help in this area, let Tom Bean know at  threetnkbean@juno.com.
The Lay Leadership Team is beginning their work to recruit committee and team members to serve for 2022. If you are not already on a team and would like to serve, please contact the church office to learn about these opportunities or fill out the form online.
Registration for fall classes is happening now at InJoy Music. We’d love to have you join us for some learning, music, and fun! School year classes begin September 11. Visit our website for more information on available classes and register today!
