Weekly Newsletter—April 28

new & upcoming at LUMC!
The Great Plains Conference of the United Methodist Church is once again hosting a virtual 5K walk/run in May. The Annual Conference theme for this year is: Abide in me and know that I am God. Tying into this theme, donations given toward this race will go toward Congregational First Aid Mental Health Trainings sponsored by the United Methodist Health Ministry Fund.
Register by May 1 to receive a T-shirt and medal. Suggested donation is $15 for adults and $10 for kids.
You can complete the 5K (or another distance if you prefer) at a time and place of your choosing or join others from LUMC in completing it at Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park. We will meet on Saturday, May 15 at 9:00 a.m. by the red barn. If you plan to participate with LUMC, please e-mail Mary.Clow@lenexaumc.org or Teila.Creekmore@lenexaumc.org so we know to expect you.
Wednesday, April 28 | 6:30–8 p.m.
UFO has been moved to April 28 (from April 21). All persons 18 and older are invited to join us that night for grilled burgers, mac & cheese, fun & fellowship. All food and beverage is provided.
Sunday, May 2 | 12 p.m. | Sunflower Shelter, Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park
Join us for an all-church picnic on Sunday, May 2. Turn in at the skate park and drive up the hill past the pool. The shelter is next to the playground on the right. Bring your own lunch and join us after church for some fun and fellowship. There are several picnic tables in the shelter, but you are welcome to bring your own chair too. We will have a few lawn games and sporting equipment. Feel free to bring other games or activities. Invite a friend!
Sunday, May 2 | 8 a.m. | Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park
Worship in the Park returns this Sunday at Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park! Bring your lawn chair or blanket and join us each Sunday by the gazebo to worship outdoors. We are celebrating the 35th anniversary of this wonderful summer worship service in 2021! In case of inclement weather, worship will move to the Underground (the basement of the Education Building).
If you’re interested in joining the Park Players musicians, contact Laurie Bratton at (816) 806-3495. The Park Players are looking for additional musicians, and welcome anyone who plays a musical instrument— especially the banjo, mandolin, guitar or harmonica.
Sunday, May 2–Sunday, May 9
It’s almost time for our annual youth fundraiser! This year there will be an online silent auction from May 2–9. Look for information in Sunday’s bulletin about how to participate. Donations are also accepted through the “envelope wall” at church, through the online giving link on the church’s website, or check or cash marked “youth fundraiser”. Thank you for supporting another year of youth ministries!
Sunday, May 9 | 12–1 p.m.
Everyone’s favorite energizer bunny, Dorothy Louise Glaettli Rose, is turning 99 on May 7! We would like to celebrate her, in these times of COVID, with a parade of cars, people and signs at LUMC on Mother’s Day. Enter the west parking lot from 91st Terrace. Dorothy will be there with bells on, if you know her. She is very excited about seeing her friends from church, around Lenexa, and her family, and cupcakes will be provided for the guests. It is not a surprise! If you can’t make it, her address is 25200 W 91st St, Lenexa KS 66227 if you want to send a card. Thank you!
See the latest financial news about your church. Pick up a copy on the information table at the top of the stairs by the office—or email linda.stokes@lenexaumc.org, and Linda will send one to you.
The May–June issue of the Upper Room is here. You may pick one up at the church, or if you would like one mailed to you, contact the church office at (913) 888-5600 or office@lenexaumc.org.
In-person worship takes place at Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park by the gazebo at
8 a.m. and in the sanctuary at 9 and 10:30 a.m.
Masks are required and COVID safety protocols are in place. If you plan on attending in person, we encourage you to read these protocols at https://lenexaumc.org/covid/.
For those who are more comfortable worshiping from home, we’re also continuing to livestream both the 9 and 10:30 services. Please tune in at facebook.com/LenexaUMC/live!

“True Freedom…According to Jesus”
Matthew 7:13-14, 10:34-39, 18:1-5, 6:24-26
With the past year, we have heard much comment and debate about our freedom and liberties as we have plowed through this pandemic. What did Jesus have to say about our freedom as he understood it? As followers of Jesus, are there not conditions which he understood to be attached to the freedom he offers us? In all of our freedom in this good country, are there not conditions placed on our freedom? Maybe it is time we begin to think about “true freedom” as offered by our Lord and Savior. And, how that translates to our everyday living, especially in the time of crisis such as a pandemic.
Rev. Jan Hayen preaching.
We will celebrate Holy Communion on May 2. Those worshiping at home can either supply their own bread and juice or pick up prepackaged communion elements at the church. Elements can be picked up at the church office or during the Dinner’s On Us drive-thru Wednesday, April 28, 5:30–6:30 p.m.
