Children (Birth - 6th Grade)
Children are a very important part of Lenexa United Methodist Church and are encouraged to actively participate in all aspects of ministry. They are welcome in the sanctuary during services, partaking in communion, and serving other ways: as acolytes, as ushers, as musicians and singers, and as servers of communion. Year-round Sunday School for all ages of children is offered along with very active Wednesday night programming, morning and evening Summer vacation Bible schools, as well as retreats and lock-ins.
We strive to make a difference in each child’s life by having them experience God’s love and service to others. Lenexa United Methodist Church is known throughout the community for its children’s programming, and serves as a mentor church for other churches in the four-state region in several ways, most often in the rotational model of teaching Sunday School.
All of the staff and adult volunteers working with children and youth at LUMC have been through protection policy training and have been submitted to background checks through the state of Kansas and SRS. - Check with

Sunday School
Classes for children, ages preschool through 6th grade, meet at 9am in the Education Building. Teaching teams are used in kindergarten and younger classes. Children in 1st through 6th grade meet together for Opening Time, and are then escorted by adult shepherds to their classrooms, where they participate in Kid’s Kingdom, a rotational method of teaching. A “theme” or story is usually studied for six weeks, with each class rotating through six learning centers: art, cooking, drama, computers, Bible skills and games, plus video.
Sunday School is also offered at 10:30am for children Pre-K through 3rd grade. This group meets in Room 209 of the Main Building (where the Sanctuary is) and use the "Bible Zone" curriculum. Older kids are invited to join us as helpers!
Jesus and Me
J.A.M. (Jesus and Me) is our Wednesday night program for children in pre-K thru 6th grade. They meet from 6:30 to 7:45pm in the Education Building. The evening includes fun Bible-related games, crafts, mission projects, and opportunities for children to participate in Children’s Choirs (Joyful Praise for K-2nd graders rehearses from 7-7:30pm; Faith Alive for 3rd-6th graders rehearses from 6:30-7pm). Note: J.A.M. and the Children's Choirs meet September thru May.
Vacation Bible School
Vacation Bible School is an annual week-long summer event for children ages 4–6th grade. We have a lot of fun while learning lessons from the Bible, such as what God’s promises are for us. This is a great time to bring your friends to church! VBS meets in the mornings from 9 am to 12:15pm, and on the last day (Friday) we have a special singing program in the Sanctuary at noon, when all our friends and family members are invited. Click here to see the photo gallery from Vacation Bible School 2009.
We are having a "High Seas" expedition during Vacation Bible School in 2010!! Dates for VBS are June 14-18, from 9am - 12:15pm. The cost is just $10 for the whole week!! Bibles
Each fall, the third graders (and older kids who haven't yet received a Bible from the church) attend a special Bible Retreat, that includes a Friday night of fun and a sleepover. During the retreat, they learn many things about the Bible. During church the next Sunday, they receive a special Bible from the church - one that is theirs to keep and use throughout their lives. This is a picture of the children who received Bibles in November, 2009!
